It is often heartbreaking for both parents and educators to watch students struggle to learn. We want education to be an adventure for our students, but far too often it becomes a nightmare! Tutoring or resource classes can be helpful, but they do not address the core issues that cause learning to be so difficult. Typically students become dependent upon this changed environment in order to just get by in school. We want for them to be independent learners, reaching their potential and able to work toward their dreams. The National Institute for Learning Development (NILD) has developed programs that very effectively address the underlying issues of the struggling learner. Discovery Center of SC, LLC, (a learning development center) offers a variety of NILD academic and cognitive programs for children throughout the school year and during the summer, which are conveniently available on the campus of New Heights School. Programs of specific educational intervention include the following: · NILD EDUCATIONAL THERAPY® (for children age 7 - college age). Two programs are available: Individual Educational Therapy and Group Educational Therapy (GET). These programs develop children's academic skills such as reading, spelling, and math, improve written expression skills, and enhance their thinking and problem solving skills. Individual Educational Therapy allows the therapist to focus on the specific perceptual and cognitive issues that are causing education to be a struggle instead of a joyful process. GET is a small group intervention utilizing the five core techniques developed for individual educational therapy. · SEARCH & TEACH© (for children ages 5-7) Search & Teach© is an early intervention program developed to meet the educational needs of young learners before they experience the frustration of learning failure. This differs from NILD Educational Therapy®, which was designed to help students who have documented learning difficulties, and in many cases have already experienced frustration and failure in the regular classroom · Rx FOR DISCOVERY READING® (for children ages 6-17) Rx for Discovery Reading is a reading program designed for children ages 6-18 who struggle to read. The focus is on establishing the essential foundational skills necessary for reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. This multi-sensory approach to discovering reading is a fun and effective approach to building and strengthening reading skills. Referral to the services provided by the Discovery Center of SC can come from either a concerned parent or through the recommendation of the teachers and administrator of the school.
